   Durham Public Schools Strategic Plan

DPS HOSPITAL SCHOOL

Description

The Durham Public Schools operates a school program serving pediatric patients at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.  The school serves children pre-k through grade 12 who are receiving in-patient and out-patient medical treatment.  The Hospital School is a collaboration between Durham Public Schools, Duke University Health Systems and the students' permanent school. Educational services are available throughout various hospital locations including the Ronald McDonald House, and in student's temporary Durham residence.

Our Mission

The mission of the Hospital School is to assist student's academic progress during medical treatment.

Philosophy

We believe the continuity of academic instruction plays a vital role in the recovery of children facing serious health conditions.

  • Education during hospitalization enhances the eventual transition to the permanent school
  • Children benefit from academic support
  • School success is enhanced by preventing the interruption of skill development
  • Secondary students benefit from the opportunity to continue earning course credit
  • Continued academic involvement communicates hope to students
